ringfinger
well you've got me working so heard lately.working my hands until they bleed.if i was twice the man i could be.i'd still be
half of what you need.still you lead me and i follow.anything you ask you know i'll do.but this one act of consecration is
what i ask of you
ringfinger.promise carved in stone.deeper than the sea.ringfinger.sever flesh and bone and offer it to me
you just left me nailed here.hanging like Jesus on the cross.i'll be dying for your sins.and aiding to the cause.
ringfinger.promise carved in stone.deeper than the sea.ringfinger.sever flesh and bone and offer it to me
wrap my eyes in bandages.confessions i see through.i get everything i want.when i get part of you
ringfinger.promise carved in stone.deeper than the sea.ringfinger.sever flesh and bone and offer it to
me.ringfinger.promise carved in stone.deeper than the sea.ringfinger.devil's flesh and bone.do something for me.
i'm so tired i can't go to sleep.and the squeaking of the bed is right in time with the song that's repeating in my head.i just
want you to know*
"when i do it, i only think of you."*
*written but not sung. sung in twist with additional lyrics.
This song conveys a message of complete submission by a man to a woman
declaring his love to a person from whom he wishes a response but has not received.

i can never remember whether this or twist was written first. if twist was, then maybe this is toned down so that there's
not a song on his record that's blatantly and obviously about s&m. (but then, this is trent we're talking about here, and he
wouldn't mind i don't think... maybe tvt would have?) as far as what he means by putting the word "ringfinger" in here, i
won't even pretend to have a clue. he puts so much emphasis on the "promise" in this song. i think he puts that word in
to invoke the kind of sanctity involved in the marriage bond, though he's not (in my opinion) talking about it literally. i
do think that, like twist, it's about s&m, but as a kind of ritual thing that signifies an unbreakable bond ("promise carved
in stone, deeper than the sea"). he makes it so intense, so important, and so ritualistic because he wants it to have
meaning even though he believes that the vast majority of things in the world have absolutely none. unable to see
anything, especially anything having to do with relationships, as positive, he seeks meaning in the ultimate of negative
sexual experiences.
