reptile

reptile

she spread herself wide open to let the insects in
she leaves a trail of honey to show me where she's been
she has the blood of reptile just underneath her skin
seeds from a thousand others drip down from within
oh my beautiful liar
oh my precious whore
my disease my infection
i am so impure
devils speak of the ways in which she'll manifest
angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress
need to contaminate to alleviate this loneliness
i now know the depths i reach are limitless
oh my beautiful liar
oh my precious whore
my disease my infection
i am so impure

the "she" in this song is surely a prostitute ("oh my precious whore"). she is cold, like the narrator, not living or fucking for pleasure, but just for the hell of it. he really finds her like himself in that both seem to be more or less fugitives from god ("devils speak of the ways in which she'll manifest/angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress") yet, somehow, probably because emptiness doesn't fill emptiness, he is still left unfufilled.

since in eraser he proves he doesn't know how to love, here he finds someone who won't care. someone who, like him, wants nothing but sex. by now he knows it won't give his life any meaning as he'd hoped it might way back in closer, but it will help him to hide from his loneliness and maybe, for a while, from his wanting to die. maybe he made the decision to kill himself and thinks he should have sex one more time before he goes, just because it meant so much to his whole worldview in the past.

I think that in Reptile, he may be singing about someone that at one point he may have loved and then this person, this " she" did something to make him loose respect for this her. Because, If you know, Trent had someone named Annie in his life before Pretty Hate Machine. She cheated on him and thus had a great impact on his life, and work. In the Downward spiral, in the song The becoming, he sings " Annie hold a lilttle tighter, I might just slip away." Reptile sings about " My precious whore.".Seeing that this person cheated on Trent, he might be referring to her in this song.Calling her a whore, yet he cared so much about her to write about this person.

This song screams to me it is almost too familiar. To me the song seems to be about the thousand voices that we hear flickering through our head (well some people's). These can drive a person to feel so alone even in the company of a loved one seeming that they are there but so far away at the same time. it can cause such problems that you would even lose the one you love because of it.
