hurt video interpretations

Is this the viewpoint of a drug addict about birth, destruction, death and re-birth? ("i hurt myself today to see if I still feel") Perhaps what he has seen, i.e., friends killed in war, destruction of the planet, etc. has driven him to emotional detachment and drug abuse. He would like to return to what he was before, but can't.

(This is the most depressing video which Trent has done; it makes me physically ill to watch this one.)
